History of Knossos

Knossos was the largest and most important city of Minoan Crete, with a history dating back to the Neolithic period (around 7000 BC). The palace of Knossos, the centre of political, cultural and economic life, was built around 1900 BC and rebuilt after earthquakes and disasters. Knossos is associated with the legend of Minos, the Labyrinth and the Minotaur.

Practical Information

Hours of operation: The archaeological site of Knossos is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. during the summer period. During the winter months, opening hours may vary.

Tickets: Admission costs 15 euros for adults. There are reduced tickets for students, children and seniors.

Guided tours: To best enjoy your visit, it is recommended that you join a guided tour or use one of the audio guides available on site.

Access: Knossos is located just 5 km from Heraklion and is easily accessible by car or public transport.

Tips for your visit

  • Wear comfortable shoes: The archaeological site is large and you will walk a lot.
  • Bring water and a hat: Temperatures can be high, especially in summer.
  • Protection from the sun: Wear sunscreen and a hat, as shadows are scarce.
