History of Spinalonga

The history of Spinalonga is long and varied. The island was originally part of the peninsula of Kolokytha, but the Venetians isolated it to use it as a defensive fortress. In 1579, they built the imposing fortifications that still awe-inspiring today. After the Ottomans conquered Crete, the island remained under Venetian control until 1715.

In the early 20th century, Spinalonga became known as a place of exile for people with leprosy, offering them a safe community away from the rest of the world. The leprosarium operated from 1903 until 1957, when a cure for leprosy was discovered and the last patients left the island.
